I hear a lot about silicone lubricants for my artificial eye. What makes them better?

You've probably heard that 100% silicone artificial eye lubricant has quickly become the state-of-the-art for prosthetic care at home. This kind of eyedrop reduces friction in your socket. Friction makes the surface of the prosthetic rough and uneven, which can destroy its usefulness. To take care of that artificial eye, surround it with silicone drops. Over-the-counter saline artificial tears will not protect against friction. Of course, friction makes the eye painful to wear. Think about a thick, long-lasting layer of silicone surrounding it. You'll be very comfortable. And you don't have to re-apply it every hour, as you would with saline solutions.

Is there any need for professional prosthetic eye care?

In some patients, thick mucus may build up. The artificial eye must be removed and washed off from time to time. In most instances, mucous buildup can be washed off the prosthesis and out of the socket by using an irrigating solution without removing the prosthesis. Of course, you need a continuing relationship with your Ocularist, just as you would with any doctor or specialist who has performed a major procedure on you.

Let's go back to silicone. A lot of people say it's great, but who says it's safe?

The Food and Drug Administration in Washington. It has approved medical-grade silicone for use in prosthetic eye care. The FDA judges all over-the-counter health products and the ingredients used. You have to prove your formula is safe. 100% silicone passed the test.

Why do I even need eyedrops?

Most artificial eye wearers experience drying due to a lack of lubrication. In such cases, the Ocularist will
recommend an oily lubricant. (This is according to the Artificial Eye Clinic in Vienna Virginia.)
Note: Silicone lubricants are not "oily", but are a more modern variation with the same protective qualities the doctors want. 100% silicone (sometimes referred to by its chemical symbol, Si) is thick, spreads evenly, and adheres. Ocularists increasingly prefer it to older, oily compounds.

Is this a "polish", like my oculist uses?

No. Just the opposite. It prevents friction. It does not wear down the device, it makes it more comfortable. You need yearly checkups, to have rough spots polished away. Usually there is a build-up of salt and protein deposits on the eye in one year's time. Polishing removes these potentially irritating deposits. Do I have to take it out?

No, but your doctor will want to. If you take it out regularly at home you can irritate your socket. Today's artificial eyes generally need less attention due to improved fitting and polishing techniques. Also, by using an Si lube, you will have little discomfort. Some people never take it out between office visits. We used to think all artificial eye wearers should remove and clean the prosthesis regularly. You may still want to. It's easy to get the orb in and out. Your ocularist can show you, and tell you what to use to clean it.

Silicone?

Nice try. Si is a great lubricant. It's not a cleanser.

Cat Eye Care - Diagnosing Cataracts As Part Of Your Cat Eye Care Program

A solid cat eye care program includes understanding the impact of some cat eye disorders on your cat's eyesight. Cataract problems are relatively rare in cats and are usually related to complications from diabetes. Some breeds inherit a tendency for developing cataracts: Birmans, Himalayans, Persians and British Shorthairs. The incidence is low and the cataract tends to remain small, often small enough to be ignored.

Of those cataracts that do cause or threaten blindness, many are treated with surgery. If blindness does result from an inoperable cataract, your feline should live a safe life if she is kept indoors. The cataract itself is not painful.

Recognizing Problems

It pays to catch the problem early. A long-term cataract is denser and harder to remove with longer surgeries tending to involve more complications. A cat owner should suspect a problem and seek veterinary attention whenever the eye appears different than it usually does.

Don't just think your cat's eyes are getting older when you notice a distinct disparity in eye clarity, increased opacity, cloudiness or a change in pupil size. These changes indicate a real problem.

Causes

Diabetes is the most common cause of cataracts in cats. The second most common cause is an inflammatory disease, like uveitis. You can readily recognize the signs of uveitis: the eye color changes, the surface of the eye is roughened and the pupil becomes smaller. This condition is painful to your cat. He may squint, have watery eyes, and eyelid spasms.

The most common causes of uveitis are the feline leukemia virus, feline infectious peritonitis, toxoplasmosis, or feline immunodeficiency virus. Early treatment of the cause can prevent a cataract or minimize the effect of one that has already formed.

Another cause of cataracts is an eye trauma. If your cat's eye is punctured in a cat fight or other incident and the outer layer of the lens is damaged, your veterinarian may talk with you about removing the lens. This is because damaged lenses tend to develop cancer in cats. Removing the lens negates the chance of cancer.

Treatment

Cataracts that go untreated can lead to glaucoma, which is a painful disease. If your cat's eyes look cloudy, watery, squinty or just don't look normal, it's time for a visit to your veterinarian. If uveitis is suspected, your veterinarian might run tests for the underlying causes and prescribe a medicated eye drop to bring the inflammation under control. If a cataract is formed or there has been eye trauma, you will probably be referred to an eye specialist, a veterinary ophthalmologist.

Surgery

Just because a cataract is present, it does not necessarily mean surgery. The size and location of the cataract are factors in treatment. If the cataract is large or very dense, then complications can be controlled with medications.

It is completely reasonable to expect your cat to have a good life even if he becomes blind. Keeping him indoors helps protect him as well as keeping things in the same place so he can learn the paths to his toys, litter box, food and favorite areas. Keep the lights dim helps him see better with what eyesight he has left.

A puncture to the eye lens or larger congenital cataracts are more likely candidates for surgery. Some cat owners forego cataract surgery that is caused by uveitis. Uveitis already causes inflammation to the eye, so surgery can just lead to more inflammation, complications and pain.

Other Considerations

The pre-op analysis, surgery and post-surgery checkups run from ,500 to ,000. Then there is the post-op medication. Opting for a small monthly cat health care insurance program helps with the financial burden. It certainly reduces the necessity of a cat eye care decision based upon limited financial resources.

Cataracts in cats are rare. As part of your cat eye care program, take a few minutes to check out your felines eyes. If you notice cloudiness, watery eyes, squinting or a significant change in your cat's eyes or navigation, look to your veterinarian for cat eye care guidance. Not all cataracts warrant surgery. A blind cat can lead a normal, happy life indoors and with proper eye medications.

Recipe # 1 - Avocado Cream: Mix 5 drops almond oil with 3 avocado slices. Dab around the eyes and leave for 5 minutes then clean your face with warm water.

Potatoes which have natural bleaching properties can be used to remove dark circles under the eyes and so can cucumbers and tea bags - which are what most people use as alternatives and supplements to anti-aging eye creams.

Recipe # 2 - Potato-Applesauce Cream: Mix about 2 tablespoons of unsweetened apple-sauce with a small potato (raw) with mixer. Apply around the eyes and cover with a washcloth damped with warm water. You can relax for about 5 minutes and clean your face with warm water.

Recipe # 3 - Melt the lanolin with water with low heat, then add almond oil. After melt the lanolin then mixed with powdered lecithin. Mix well together with water. Now you got yourself a cream to lighten dark circles under the eyes.

Recipe # 4 - Mix lemon juice, tomato puree, orange lentil flour and turmeric powder until pasty. Using Electric mix at low speed will help to create better mix. Apply under the eye and relax. Don't forget to clean your face with warm water after 15 minutes.

This might not the best eye wrinkle cream but it will lighten dark circles under the eyes.

With these home-made eye cream will work just as well as store antiaging eye cream.
